We will teach you how to handle the most common types of orthodontic problems, however if anything is causing you discomfort please call us so we can schedule an emergency appointment to at least make you comfortable. It may be necessary to schedule an additional appointment for any repairs. We strive to keep the office schedule on time and we also understand how valuable your time is, so always call the office for an appointment so we can keep your wait time to a minimum.
Below is a list of things that sometimes occur, as well as some remedies and instructions in case an emergency does occur.
- Soreness or Tenderness: Rinse with warm salt water and/or take Tylenol or Ibuprofen such as Advil.
- Loose Bracket or Band: If the band or bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place. If it is uncomfortable place wax on it. If it comes out completely, save it by putting it in a zip lock bag and bring it to your next appointment. Please call our office and let us know something is loose so we determine if an additional appointment will be necessary.
- Wire Causing Irritation: gently move the wire away from the irritation with a cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil. If the wire is out of the tube or bracket try placing it back in with tweezers. If it is still rubbing, use wax to cover the section that is causing the discomfort. As a last resort use a small wire cutter or nail clipper to clip the wire to the back of the last brace. Clip the wire only if our office is unavailable and please call to inform us so an additional appointment can be scheduled.
- Loose Appliances - expanders, pendulums, holding arches etc. An additional appointment will need to be made so that the appliance can be recemented, therefore please call our office.
