When should kids first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends scheduling your child’s first orthodontic visit by age 7. Around this time, kids often have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, and because their jaws are still developing, it’s the perfect time to monitor how adult teeth are coming in—and determine if early treatment could help guide their smile.
Not every child will need early orthodontic treatment, but without regular growth monitoring, crowding and other developing issues may make orthodontic treatment more challenging later.
What’s included with free growth monitoring?
As your child grows, the team at Boren Orthodontics keeps an eye on how their smile is developing. By monitoring growth early, we can spot orthodontic concerns before they become more serious—making future treatment simpler and more predictable. During growth monitoring visits, we may look for:
- Potential crossbite or open bite development
- Breathing concerns, such as mouth breathing
- The position of baby and permanent teeth
- Crowding or spacing that could affect how permanent teeth develop
- How permanent teeth are coming in
- Teeth that may be at risk for injury or decay due to protrusion or crowding
- Habits that may lead to orthodontic problems, like thumb sucking
- Oral hygiene and overall dental health
- Balanced facial growth and appearance
And because we make visits fun and comfortable, kids get used to seeing the orthodontist—so over time, it becomes no big deal at all.
What is early orthodontic treatment?
Early orthodontic treatment — sometimes called Phase I — is a proactive way to help kids’ smiles develop properly. While it’s separate from our free growth monitoring visits, it can prevent small issues from becoming bigger ones, making later treatment shorter, simpler, and more comfortable.
In some cases, the Boren Orthodontics team can achieve results that aren’t possible once the face and jaws have finished growing. Early treatment, which may include appliances like a palate expander, helps us to:
- Guide jaw growth for a balanced smile
- Protect front teeth from injury
- Correct habits that can affect teeth, like thumb sucking
- Boost confidence and appearance early on
- Reduce the need for extractions of permanent teeth
- Fix teeth that bite incorrectly or don’t meet properly
With early treatment, kids get a head start on a healthy, confident smile — and parents can feel good knowing we’re taking steps now to make future treatment easier.
